The story behind the story I covered the Democratic Leadership Council (DLC) meeting held last month in Denver and heard some very positive comments about Colorado's chances for the Democratic Convention. With this confidence, I entered a discussion about conventions sites with some out-of-state Democratic associates who are closely connected to the Democratic National Committee.

No one was more surprised than me to find out that the problems with the Unions (more national than local) and facilities, including the convention center, had possibly knocked Denver out of front-runner position. As mentioned before, the final decision won't be made until at least November, and with a second site visit by the DNC committee, perhaps these obstacles have been resolved. The state convention committee recently announced that they had procured 19,000 hotel rooms for the event, about 2,000 more than requested.

I still cannot forget the comments from one DLC attendee from the Brookings Institution who said that party positioning, viewers, PR, media coverage, marketing, etc etc have as much to do about the convention selection as facilities. As John Kerry found out, if a presidential candidate and the party do not get a substantial "bounce" from the convention, that's a hell of a lot of money wasted and opportunities missed.

really? That's too bad. You and I have talked about this before, and how the Dems should show their support for labor and help get these hotels organized.

Yeah, right The Denver people trying to get the convention here sure look at it that way, what with there outright disdain for the Denver Area Labor Federation and unions. And I base this solely on the comments that have been made by them.
