The Colorado Independent: There’s Been No “Immigration Debate,” Only Anti-Mexican Posturing

thank you for the guest commentary, Luis I must admit that I never cease to be amazed at the lack of historical context most Americans have when it comes to immigration.

I grew up in working class neighborhoods of the industrial rust belt where factories where a panoply of religions, cultures and languages from the old country that peacefully co-existed with native born Americans. One could easily substitute "Mexican worker" today in conversations about Irish, Italians, Poles, Serbians, etc., that occured 100 years ago.

America didn't go to hell in a handbasket then when we had similar global problems with hegemonic nations, fascist states, and fragile economies.

    And American won't go now.

Time Will Change Our Attitudes Let us not forget that about 60 years after the Irish were on the bottom rung of the immigration ladder, we elected an Irish president, John F. Kennedy. Hopefully, our children will be wondering what the big deal about Latino immigrants was all about when they are our age.

I'd like to think so, but . . . It isn't like Mexican immigration is new.  There was a big wave during the Mexican Revolution in the 1910s, for example.  And there have been Mexican immigrants in Colorado since the Gold Rush.  I don't think the analogy to European immigrants has held so far, but I hope you are proven right.
