False Premise Christians and all other religious people pretend that their  myths are powerful and have information in them that's useful.  These are people who are mentally ill.  Apparently, reality is a sad reminder of their diminished mental capacity.

I laugh at their stupidity.  Too bad for Ted.  He could have actually had a real relationship.  Instead he opted for fantasy.  He ruined his entire family because he simply couldn't be true to himself.  Tiny violin playing.

Hey Ted, why didn't your Sky God fix you all up?  Is it because you couldn't pray hard enough?  Or was it because you were hard for something other than your wife?

  • Truthteller · 1 year ago
Nice example of hate speech. One wonders how you can live a life so obviously full of bile and bitterness.

And isn't it odd how any discussion of religion these days brings the Christian-bashers out of the woodwork.  You have to wonder just what it is that they're so afraid of that they have to try and tear down Christianity any way that they can.

  • Beckett · 1 year ago
Religious Fanatics Isnt' it odd how any discussion of religion begins and ends with your facile belief in the torture-god Jesus.

Well, fanatic, go ahead and WAIT for the end of the world, because I'm SURE you'll be one of the chosen FEW. How lucky you are.

But for me, I don't worship at the foot of your torture-shrine and I couldn't care less about the SICK IRONY which emcompasses the entirety of your dogma.

Yes, we, the anti-mind control crowd, are sick of Christians and their INTOLERANCE and SELF-RIGHTEOUSNESS, sick of Muslims and their SURE-FIRE HATE, sick of the politicians who pay lip-service to those child-like tropes which are required to placate that particular religious psychosis.

I suggest to you, Christian, that HERCULES is a much more valid demi-god deserving of worship. After all, he wrestled the White Bull of Heaven into submission. That kicks ass on water-into-wine.

  • Albatross · 1 year ago
Haggard Interesting, Truthteller, that you believe this to be a discussion of religion, when in fact, it's a discussion of Ted Haggard, and the so-called reformability of homosexuals.

So many Christians believe they have a Biblical exemption when it comes to being hateful to other human beings.

I wonder, did you find it problematic when Ted Haggard spewed his hate speech from the pulpit "bashing" homosexuals publicly, while privately...well, you know.

"You reap what you sow...," so if you feel Christians are "bashed" perhaps you should be asking what they have sown.

  • SCLib · 1 year ago
Way Too Cute to Cure! Speaking as a lifelong homo, I just gotta tell one and all that Ted Haggard is way too cute to 'cure'.  Unless he has some massive uglifying plastic surgery or a near fatal auto accident or some other disfiguring mishap... he'll always LOOK gay, no matter how much therapy or brainwashing he undergoes.  So, Brother Ted, just take a deep breath, click your heels three times, and accustom yourself to your natural inclinations!
  • johnie2xs · 1 year ago
Hypocrisy   It is not Christianity being bashed. It's the blatant hypocrisy of its practitioners, plain and simple. It's the arrogance they display, and the compassion that they don't, which as far as I'm concerned, should relegate them to the dust bin of political discourse.
      "Who would Jesus hate?"
  • Truthteller · 1 year ago
Wow, even more hate speech. Nice.  Thanks for the examples.
  • Truthteller · 1 year ago
Sorry to have to point it out but that little rant began with "Christians......" and went on from there.  So this is far from limited to Ted Haggard at this point.

And then YOU said, "So many Christians believe....."

So how is this just a discussion of Ted Haggard?

Maybe you should think a little more before you post?

  • Truthteller · 1 year ago
So, for example, if I said something like "all homosexuals are mentally ill," that wouldn't be bashing homosexuality?  Is that what you're saying?  Because the accusation was made that all Christians are mentally ill.

(Accusing all of them of "arrogance" and lacking compassion is also bashing, in case you didn't realize it).

  • Albatross · 1 year ago
Thinking More Haggard was a hypocritical Christian, a hate-spewing, homosexual basher. To those of your ilk, this is OK? I ask again, did you object to Haggard bashing homosexuals and adulterers from the pulpit, or do you believe that you have been granted a "Biblical exemption" to bash your enemy of the day? It gets so tiresome listening to Christians whine and moan about "persecution" when the tables turn on their own despicable behavior. Point your finger, three point back.

I reiterate - "You/we (all) reap what you/we sow." If you have a problem with what is being reaped, you should be asking yourself, what is being sown?

I also notice that "many Christians" answer questions by asking questions. Is the glare in the mirror too blinding?

  • lex107 · 1 year ago
Forgiveness? What's so interesting about this case is that it shows that deep down many Christian extremists do not believe homosexuality can be cured.  You can be "restored," but you're always tainted.  In this case, Haggard repented and did everything they asked, but he still "should not return to vocational ministry." Why?  Because the restoration is "incomplete" (i.e. it didn't work).

Regardless of whether you think being gay is a sin, this seems like a radical failure of the central Christian doctrine of forgiveness.

  • Albatross · 1 year ago
Forgiveness I believe that it was Haggard who walked away from the "process," not the church reaching the conclusion that the "process" had reached a conclusion.

Incidentally, the timing is curious. Part of Haggard's severance package was paid salary through 2007. His salary was contingent upon his participation in so-called restoration therapy, and there was definitely talk about him not ever returning to ministry at their church.

Haggard will probably find himself some new fools, I mean followers, in some obscure little town and pick up where he left off. He may even use his mail-order psych degree to manipulate "situations" that satisfy him.

  • Cenobite · 1 year ago
nope Nope, sorry little Xtian man, but you cannot apply your "moral" standards to people who do not accept your initial premise to begin with.  YOU have arbitrarily decided that religious discussions bring out Xtian bashers.  YOU have also arbitrarily decided that the Xtian bashers owe you Xtians some kind of politeness and respect, and should not ever ever EVER try to tear down Xtianism.

Are you starting to see the hypocrisy here?  You have already acknowledged that these critics are coming out of the woodwork to bash your precious religion.  You have already decided that they are cowards and barbarians who could never recognize truth.  YOU are the one coming to these discussions with bias and blindness in your heart.  How dare you make the claim that you are better than they are?  Since you have acknowledged that the critics do not like your religion, how dare you demand that they show Xtianism the same respect that you do?  Are you really this dumb or does it take special vitamins?

What's the matter, can't you take some heat?  I thought you Xtians were supposed to love and support and accept your fellow man despite any sins.  And here you are, fighting back tooth and nail.  How very humble and meek and Xtian of you.  Your little god of infinite love and forgiveness must be so proud of you.  Turn the other cheek so I can slap you around the internets some more.  Now go ahead and write another reply post and call me some uncivil names in the name of your civil god.  I triple dog-dare you.

  • (: Tom :) · 1 year ago
    Another example So, for example,

if I said something like "all homosexuals are mentally ill," that wouldn't be bashing homosexuality?  Is that what you're saying?  Because the accusation was made that all Christians are mentally ill.

The officials of a number of churches (not sure if one of them is yours, you didn't say which flavor of religion you follow) have made numerous statements to the effect that all homosexuals are abominations, pedophiles, pederasts, not fit to live, and are condemned to rot in hell for all eternity.  Their members do not seek to distance themselves from such remarks, and are in effect supporting this type of 'free speech'.  Do you support those who would make statements like this?  If so, how does your position differ from those you criticize here?  Why do you think it is okay for you to ask this sort of thing when your religious officials behave in a simliar manner?  And why don't you focus on those who are distorting your faith with their illogical innaccurate interpretations of it?

(Accusing all of them of "arrogance" and lacking compassion is also bashing, in case you didn't realize it).

by: Truthteller @ Wed Feb 06, 2008 at 11:26:40 AM CST

Calling all homosexuals sinners/godless sodomites/immoral abominations/etc., and lacking compassion for them, could probably be viewed as bashing, too, in case you were unaware of that...

Confusing Very vague PR. Has he accepted gay or bi DNA or is he still in denial? Are there addiction issues (drugs)? Does his wife accept him? Does any of this matter?
  • bjreed · 1 year ago
Can they just reboot him? It seems they don't know much about restoration.  I think if they could just find his off switch, they could turn him off and then back on.  With that, all of his systems would be restored to normal.  And if he is still gay, well, maybe he has a problem with his motherboard?

Not all Christians are religious I'm a Christian.  I'm not religious, mean-spirited, or out to get anyone, because God is not that way.  Gays, lesbians, and whoever/whatever wants to walk through the door of my church is welcome.

My bible says that there are only 2 commandments to follow--1.  Love God.  2.  Love my neighbor as I love myself.  There is no fine print--the bible does not say I am to love some people more than I love others.

My bible also says that we all sin.  Who am I to accuse someone of sinning when I cannot be perfect?

I am a Christian liberal (like Jesus was) and I vote.

    Shalom.

"Hate speech" I dunno where you're from, but where I come from "hate speech" is a legal term with a precise definition.  Elsewhere it is used informally with the same definition.  You are using the term incorrectly.

Stating an opinion that homosexuality or Xianity is a mental illness is not hate speech.  Advocating that homosexuals or Xians should be treated as vermin and killed (or assaulted, be cast out of society, etc) is hate speech.  Do you see the difference?

By the way, it is not a crime to be mentally ill.  It is not a sin to be mentally ill.  There should not be a stigma against admitting to mental illness, but thanks to folks like you, there is.  You are projecting your own hatred by making that comparison.

  • RadioResearch · 1 year ago
Not all christians are christians Thank you Shoup for your observations. When jesus says that there are but two commandments, love god, and love one another, he means that we must do so in am unconditional manner for one cannot love god without loving god unconditionally. Likewise, one cannot love god unconditionally if one does not love one's fellow human being unconditionally.

Unconditional love has no room for prejudice, hatred, dicrimination, or moral judgement and that includes homosexuality. Jesus' teachings do not discriminate in the manner of the old testament from which the so-called christians take this admonition on homosexuality. Indeed, even paul said that Jesus frees us from the law, i.e, the Torah and thus frees us from all of that old testament crap, be it the dietary laws or the laws against homosexuality (remember, the Torah says that eating shellfish is also an abomination which puts clam chowder ingestion on the same level as homosexuality).

Also, the great Jewish Kabbalist Maimonides said some 800 years ago that should science or fact contradict the torah we should go with the fact and interpret the passge in the Torah as metaphorical. Since it appears that homosexuality is genetic and nuerochemical this "fact" would therfore apply.

The problem for most Christians is that they are abysmally ignorant of their own faith and thus engage in frequent hypocricy - unwittingly of course because they are too lazy and too propagandized to do some biblical scholarship and thus get their head out of their anus.

  • ToTellTheTruth · 1 year ago
Does it sound familiar, Truthteller??? One wonders how you can have a life so obviously full of bile and bitterness.

And isn't it odd how any discussion of "Gay" or "Homosexuality" these days brings the Christian-Gay-bashers out of the woodwork? You have to wonder just what it is they're so afraid of that they have to try and tear down anyone that doesn't share their particular interpretation of the scriptures any way they can.

(I love too, how the so called Christians swarm to stories about "gays", so excited just to read anything they can find related to the subject....some of you wouldn't secretly be getting some little tickle, you know......down there....would you???? Trust me, the Ted Haggard situation is NOT rare or unusual!)

  • Jasper von Schnitzelwasse · 1 year ago
(raspberry noise) I suspect Ted has passed some of his time pole-smoking, and another scandal's a-brewing.

You know how Christians say that gay people wave it in their face, recruit children, want to take over the country and want special rights?

Turns out those are just-self-deceptions Christians require that allow them to pretend they aren't waving their Christianity in people's faces, recruiting children, trying to take over the country and demanding special rights.

I know only so many decent Chrsitians that I can count on one hand. One of them is a close friend. I've rejected most of the others after a lifetime of actual encounters with them; in which greater than 99 percent of them prove to be assinine, arrogant, grating, sanctimonious people whom God wouldn't even want to spend five minutes with.

Just for clarification A) Truthteller (an ironic name if ever there was one),is not a guy..it claims to be female.  If you ask it about why it became a fanatical xtian it will give you the whole rundown on how it was molested as a child, and found salvation and peace in Jebus.  A pathetic story, and a pathetic excuse for a human being.

    B) She/it, has been pretty much banned from every Buzzen.com religion chat room as a disruptive troll who rejects debate but never tires of her fire and brimstone idiocy.

    C) Ted Hag deserves no sympathy.  A liar, a hypocrite, and intolerant jerk,  he is the quintessential example of Christianity as a whole, and evagelical extremism in particular. His wife is as far gone as he is in that regard, and likely has known about his hidden gay lifestyle for years.  Lets save our tears and sympathy for people who endure discrimination promulgated by mindless phoneys like Haggard.

    Confused "I'm a Christian.  I'm not religious, ..."

If you're the first, you're the second.  Check out a dictionary if you're tempted to argue.

"My bible also says that we all sin."

Not me, buddy. Your bible is a collection of plagiarised Bronze Age, camp fire stories.  It's filled with all the nonsense you'd expect given that it was written by men who didn't have a clue about how the world around them worked.

Also, every miracle attributed to the fictitious character of Jesus was reported in earlier religions and superstitions.  Every one of them.

'Sin' is a construct that requires a deity to exist.  There are no deities, therefore no sin.

Also, to follow the Golden Rule requires no belief in Sky Fairies.

  • damilgin · 1 year ago
Christianity "Christianity is the greatest perversion that has ever shown on man." Thomas Jefferson, US President.

Christianity is full of hypocrisy.  Ted Haggard is a perfect example.  I find it interesting that Texas, and other States write discrimination in to the state constitution, to ban gay people to marry.

If marriage is such a "sacred union" between a man and a woman, then why hasn't divorced been banned?

I was brought up a Christian, but as I matured, I saw it for what it is - the most intolerant, judgmental, hate filled religion.  Christians may say they love everyone, but their actions speak differently.

All religions are the cause of wars, killing, and discrimination.  Peace will not come to the world until religion is eliminated.

    RELIGION KILLS FOLKS DEAD!!!

  • triptide · 1 year ago
I'm sure the extra prayer will do the trick. Sometimes it takes over 10,000 people praying at the same time for heterosexuality to be restored.

A hundred, or a thousand people, is just not good enough.

Those prayers are heard louder, and can scare away the same sex lust-devil that lodges himself inside we Christians sometimes.

I know that Haggard will pull out of this, and Jesus will once again come into him fully.

  • freethoughtpedia.com · 1 year ago
politics This isn't about Haggard being gay or straight.  This is about the pastor of his church wanting to keep Haggard from competing with him.  It's politics, and typical mean-spirited politics.
  • Albatross · 1 year ago
Politics? Sorry. I really thought it was about hypocrisy. I think Haggard should consider himself "blessed." After all, the $138,000 severance pay he received was ultimately from the church members that this b**tard deceived over and over. Do you suppose there would be a "mean-spirited political war" had Haggard lived by the words (most of them vile) he preached, or was he above it all, somehow?

  • Truthteller · 1 year ago
Hmmmm. Let's recap. Let's see...."ilk,"......."bash your enemy of the day".........."whine and moan"......"their own dispicable behavior".........etc.

Yep, pure hate speech.  Not surprising, but not very original, either.

Keep it up.  Your own words are showing just how much of a hater you are.

(P.S.  I never claimed to be Christian.  But you don't have to be one to recognize when someone hates them.)

  • terra · 1 year ago
Hate? I guess it's ok to bash gays though? why is it that Christians are so sensitive to their religion being bashed but are brain dead about them bashing other's lives.

Why is it always bashing Christianity when its just some of the Christains that are being bashed?

  • Truthteller · 1 year ago
And when you can show me "Calling all homosexuals.... ...any of those things, you can rightfully accuse me of bashing that particular group.  Sorry to pop the bubble of your delusions, but you won't find any of that from me.  But you WILL find me pointing it out when you or others engage in hate speech against anyone.  Don't like it?  Tough.

So you're not sure what church I belong to (in fact, I don't), but you accuse me or my fellow religionists (of which there aren't any, but telling that little fable doesn't seem to bother you) of making "numerous statements....."  Hmm.  Maybe you ought to actually CHECK YOUR FACTS before you make accusations?  Or is that too much to ask?  No doubt, easier to simply engage in mindless hateful false accusations.  Well, let us know if that works out for you in the long run.

  • Truthteller · 1 year ago
More hatred and bashing   I confess, it begins to be boring, it's so predictable.

And anyone who engages in such IS a coward and a barbarian.  Sorry to have to be the one to tell you that.  So before you come to these discussions with all that bias and blindess, perhaps you should open your eyes and look in a mirror.

(P.S.  I never claimed to be a Christian, or Xtian, if you prefer your own attempt to disparage through childishness.  Let us know when you've grown up enough to have an adult discussion, eh?)

Tearing down Christianity Truthteller, there is a reason that some of us folks may sound bitter. We have listened to your "oh us poor Christians, we're a persecuted minority" BS for decades now. We have listened as your leaders blamed 9-11 on gays and lesbians (Falwell), openly called for the assassination of foreign leaders (Robertson), lied and mislead school boards in an effort to replace science with creation myths, and consistently covered up and/or downplayed your own church scandals which have hurt children and exploited the poor and elderly. We have watched you elected a born-again president who has systematically bankrupted the nation and sent thousands to be killed and maimed in an illegal war. Now it's time for you to face the music. Let the Christian-bashing continue.  You deserve it.

Define Hate Speech Is anything that points out the flaws in your beliefs hate?  Look, if you are a Christian you DO worship a God that was tortured to death, the icons in your church are full of violent imagery.  Your God lives in the sky, and refuses to communicate directly (unless he whispers silently in only your ear) until the end of the world.  Which you celebrate and pray will come soon.

I know, it's not particularly pleasant to look at your beliefs from another perspective, but those of us out here that have taken a good hard look at the dominant religions of the world and decided we simply don't buy the dogma have a right to speak out boldly.

We don't hate you and pointing out the flaws in your belief systems may actually help this world stop killing and bind us together in loving our unique position on this fragile planet.

We can fight over make-believe or we can recognize that all the evidence points to the fact that we are all we have.  This planet is all that we have. This life is all that we have.

I want simply that we wake up, stop killing and start protecting the planet we live on.  The best way to do that is to give up on ancient myths that encourage slaughter and waste and start living for each other NOW.

If you think that's hateful, maybe you should lay off the KOOL-AID
