John Andrews’ strange, clueless ‘Coloradan of the Year’ column
I've been in 12 Step recovery for 21+ years, and recognize when someone has co-opted the language of recovery in service to their continuing addiction, rather than acquiring the language as a result of living the concepts ! Teddy-Boy is doing what he's always done - avoiding reality, lying about it, and expecting others to support him.
Oh, and how terribly convenient - he's now "ministering" to recovering addicts and prostitutes ! Three months tops, and he'll be snorting meth again and having sex with the clients.
I've been in for 10 years... I read over the letter, and I couldn't really see any 12-step-speak in there. What part(s) are you referring to?
In any case, I agree, he's not in recovery, and even if he was, he would be in such early sobriety that he'd still be bat-shit insane. Heh.
He understands himself to be some special species called a 'minister' and so he never needs to go out and develop the depth of character that comes from acquiring and keeping a real job.
He is in his mind 'chosen' and 'anointed' to be some exempted creature that lives off others, in exchange for the special connection to God that he brings to true believers.
He is doing penance by going to the 'depths' of society, as the recovery/addiction mission will be perceived by his obese suburban congregants.
This 'heroic' act needs to be supported by his followers, who are following the trajectory of his ascension, fall and anticipated restoration to a place of adulation and veneration.
He has no connection whatsoever to any of the principles or necessary deflation of ego and transformation of character brought about by sincerely working a 12-Step program.
He must be very lonely and very frigthen, as he continues to live in the towering glare of an angry God.
We can only pray that he will find his true bottom, and discover a 'Loving God', as he 'understands God', to quote the AA Traditions.
And someone should send his wife an Al-anon phamplet or two, because she is certainly surrounded by addict qualifiers galore!!!
I'm surprised the predatory Hollywood agents haved already signed option contracts for the true story made-for-tv movies of his kids' lives, to be made decades from now . . . think, 'Daddy Dearest', and maybe Mel Gibson could play Ted.
And Markie Mark could play Mike Jones . . .
Well, Ted is certainly praying to find a true TOP !
I'm happy to see that he is making an effort to put his life back together. I hate to see anybody spend the rest of his life in the gutter.
He is living at a halfway house which means that, if it is like most of the halfway houses I am familiar with, he is paying minimal rent, if any at all, and his meals are provided. Since he is also serving in a ministerial capacity there, it would not surprise me at all to learn that he and his family were staying there rent-free.
To the extent that his room and board are already being provided, he should be able to meet his daily basic needs (I'm not talking about "wants" here) by taking a minimum wage job somewhere; his wife--who must be a real saint to stay with somebody like him--could do the same. I would certainly be a little more convinced of his sincerity in putting his life back together if he actually were to make the effort to support himself. And he might actually develop some character in the process.
Jesus talked about how valuing one's possessions too highly can damage one's relationship with God. And the AA book talks about being willing to go to any lengths to get and stay sober. Yet he is hanging onto his house worth over $700,000 and asking others to support him. That is not "going to any lengths" in my opinion. He's more than capable of supporting himself just with that house. At the very least, he could start renting it out, if indeed not outright sell it.
Ted and Gayle Haggard, 9699 N. Hayden, Suite 108, PMB 180, Scottsdale, AZ 95259. This is a private mail box address that we have been using since we moved to the Phoenix area.

Having just sat through the board meeting of a very troubled church (not my own), I concluded that the source of all the trouble was 3 of the 5 individuals I had just met with. The words of one of them still ring in my ears: "We have the mind of God and everybody else just needs to realize that and fall in line."
This sort of attitude, that `God speaks to me because I am on a higher level than you and because I am in a position of leadership' needs to be one that sets off an alarm in the minds of every Christian. Unfortunately many simply follow along blindly. The improper utterances of Oral Roberts himself were, I believe, simply the emotional randerings of an honest man who was wounded by the deaths of his daughter, son and two grandchildren. However his imitators, and Ted is certainly one of them, seem to see grandiose prophecies as a sign of spiritual supremacy.
When Ted & Gayle first left the New Life Church, I pleaded with them to stay behind and allow their bleeding followers to see them while they were vulnerable. Gayle is a very sweet person, not the emotional visionary or the would-be prophet that her husband is. I had hoped that she would take the lead here and turn the situation into an ultimately victorious one. Instead they went the path of the Bakkers and Jimmy Swaggart; that of going into seculsion until the story died down and leaving wounded followers in confusion.
Now that the story has died down, they (or I suspect he) want contributions to support another endeavor in which he will take the lead in reaching those on a lower scale. From what I have read about the University of Phoenix, it is anything but the sort of quality institution that will instill skills to be able to minister to drug addicts, convicts, prostitutes, etc.
In short, Ted simply needs to adjust to the fact that God frequently uses the humble individual BEHIND THE SCENES to accomplish His purposes rather than a wild megachurch adventurer. Gayle would be content with that. She is just that sort of a person. Ted needs to either follow her lead or simply let her lead.

When I wanted to go to grad school, I was working full time, driving 1 1/2 hours round trip to work. I also volunteered at my church and served on the school board.
Of course, my husband worked full time too so we could support our family.
Maybe his wife could work F/T to support them while he went to school and then he could work while she went to school like the rest of us mere mortals have to do.
The gall of them, assuming that people should support them.
Let them support themselves.
It is totally possible to be free of the spiritual bondages that got him there in the first place, however, he is naive to think that the cause and effect of his actions will not have a consequence in his family that will take a long time to heal.
He is a child of God who is acting up and he will be dealt with. It's not for you or I to judge, but to support him and all others in prayer. However, we are to use wise discernment in who we trust.
Ted is naive to think that I will support any endeavor he wants money for when I see that he has not sold everything, going to the SAME church to live with the FAMILY that could help him heal and stop hiding.
God loves us all, I'm not trusting of anything Ted asks of me - I am to be a good steward of what God gave to me. Supporting Ted would NOT be good stewardship for me. Caution to those who do support him and I hope you don't get upset if we say, "We told you so" when he goes back to his "looking good" way of living (i.e. the nice big home, free ride to school, etc.). YES, let him get a job.
I think he is still WAY in the dark. I pray that he find the light and freedom from his strongholds and his blindness to what we can see from the outside in.
May God Bless him and us too in the journey!

Markleslie, get that chip off your shoulder. Pastors don't get paid to bestow their special connection with God on people, believe they are exempt from work, or have no experience with developing depth of character. They work hard all week long and must have and use a wide range of skills, training and education. They don't get to twiddle their thumbs all week and think about how they are going to bless people on Sunday morning with some random spiritual diarrhea of the mouth. Their jobs are demanding, stressful, and downright painful a lot of the time. They are under constant criticism, are mostly grossly underpaid, and are often even abused by their members. And their wives often get to be in on this fun for no pay at all. You are completely ignorant.
That said, I'll bet your twisted idea on ministers is spot-on for Mr. Haggard. He sounds like a genius manipulator and con man. I think I'll go write a letter asking HIM for support. Self-serving bastard.
What a freak and a fraud and a joke. Why is his wife still married to him. She is a freak and a one weird woman in my book. He sucks penis among other things. I dont feel sorry for her one bit. Fool!
So far there is absolutely no evidence from the IRS Publication 78 that lists all non-profit organizations or Guidestar, a site that maintains information on over 3 million non-profits in the US, that Families With A Mission has ever been recognized by the IRS as a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. This means no deduction for people who contribute through FWAM. It also means that FWAM, Huberty and Haggard may be adding fraud and tax evasion to their list of misdeeds.
Once the IRS gets wind of this they are in SERIOUS trouble. Remember, Al Capone got brought down for tax evasion, not any of his other crimes. The FWAM gang may be about to follow.
Something else about the email is just not right -- maybe the tone or the style... Also, can Haggard be actually so careless (or stupid) to ask people to send money to a dicey "nonprofit"? Even he must know that the IRS does not look kindly on "laundering" money for personal gifts thru a nonprofit.
I am wondering whether the email is actually from Ted Haggard (did the original recipient verify the source?), or whether Haggard was high on something when he wrote it (if he did).
Ted Haggard's online bio (at wikipedia so of course THAT might not be correct). Jonathan born 1989 (thus would turn 18 during 2007 -- listed in letter as age 20); Alex born 1992 (turn 15 in 2007 --listed as 16); Elliot born 1995 (turn 12 in 2007 -- listed as age 14).
Or maybe my math is wrong.
I say he still has a spirit of greed all over him. Devil's trick? I'd say. Sure isn't a cause I find worthy as a faithful steward.

Haggard follows a pattern set by the evangelical freaks in this country: While in power, they rant and rave against anti-Bush Americans, calling them anti-family, unpatriotic and whatever other label they can come up with.
Then comes the fall: they're found with a prostitue, or rape young boys, or bilk followers out of millions. Suddenly they're humble, crying on TV, seeking forgiveness and understanding.
It's too late by this time to limit their damage. They've spent years collecting money from their flocks to send to the Republicans for election campaigns. They've damaged the lives of free Americans and ruined the careers of liberals in their hometowns. And all along they preach their love of God and Christ and ...
Please understand ... the mega churches are businesses, that's all! The money has fueled the stripping of civil liberties, the takeover of the military by evangelicals, movies, CDs, DVDs, and books calling on America to start Armagedden.
I am ashamed of all Americans who attend any mega church or trust Haggard or the hundreds of other religious freaks in the Republican Party
It's all tied together: homosexual rape of young boys, Christianity, meth, and Republican push for total war.
Let's make all churches pay taxes, end of story and ban political contributions from so-called relgious and family groups for all time.
Let's end the theocracy created by lying "Christians" and the insanely stupid George Bush.
Let's take back America from the freaks of nature in America's mega churches.

Could Teddy's friend be running aa scam?
He ought to go dig ditches and earn his money instead of begging suckers for it.
the address is
9699 N. Hayden Road #108 (this next number is the post office box within that address)
Scottsdale, AZ 85258
When one gets an address at a private mail box, they first use their name or the name of their business, then EVERYONE uses the street address plus the suite number (in this case #108) then they add another number...that is their individual box number...
There could be hundreds (depending on the size of the business) that uses that same street address and suite number...
Having said all that, Ted is a fraud and a very sick and greedy person.
ALL churches should not be tax exempt - it is time for them to start paying their share - they do use government services and should no longer be exempt.
These evangelical ministers who claim a special relationship to God are the most repressed individuals in society. Their followers treat them like rock stars, they are paid like rock stars, they want to believe they are rock stars, but yet have to act like puritans. Eventually their perversion surfaces and is obvious for all to see. The result: many are shocked, but why?
Understand that these guys are hanging by a thread. How long will it be before his perversion surfaces and what will it be?
Being treated like a rock star doesn't make you a homosexual. And that's what Ted is, plain and simple. The difference between a homosexual, and one who doesn't admit it until they've lied to 25 million people about it?
Most follks just go BE homosexuals and live their lives in peace.
Religious nutcases like Haggard have to be a homosexual, AND keep up the nonsense facade of christianity.
Of course he's going to fall flat on his ass in front of everyone. They all will eventually if they live long enough.
He's not evil because he's gay. He's evil because he's a liar who proves once again that christianity is one of the most evil things ever to happen to the people on this planet.

Serious deja vu here, a "religious" leader who doesn't want to work for his money, lies about drugs, whines for people to give him an income...
Ted ought to change his name to L. Ron Haggard. There's very little difference between him and the founder of Scientology.
I really feel sorry for his children who don't have any choice in the matter. I hate having bureaucracy interfere in people's lives, but in this case a visit from child services might be warranted.
Nope, I see two thick-skinned leeches who perversely revel in the public humiliation and debasement as long as other religious suckers will pay their way, support their lifestyle and eventually put them back in the pulpit or power.
These con artists and hustlers are no different from Jimmy Swaggart, Oral Roberts, Jimmy Bakker and countless other lesser-known Bible-thumping fire and brimstone preachers.
It also brings to mind the hilarious and heartwarming saga of Florida Republican State Representative Bob Allen who gave $20 to an undercover cop in a public restroom and offered to give him a blow job because, as he explained later when arrested, he was afraid he was going to be mugged by the scary black man.
Oh, and that postscript! 'Our handicapped son' appears so vile, manipulative and self-serving! The language of the letter is despicable, as the appropriate form would be 'Our son, who is handicapped'.
I've met two-dollar crack whores with more class, dignity and self-respect!
