I can't believe how disrespectfully you are all treating John McCain. After all, he was a POW. Do you think his captors let him postpone beatings or interrogations? Now that he, as a war hero, my friends, wants to postpone the debate to allow him to once again come to the aid of his country, as a war hero, my friends, and cast his all-important vote on the bailout which no less than Vice President Cheney left his undisclosed bunker location to get the House Republicans on board, you are going to fault this POW war hero, my friends, from wanting to postpone the debate?

    ROFLLMFAO

The guy crashed planes in Nam, now his whole campaign is crashing... er.. my friends. POW. Maverick. Deregulate -- er -- I mean regulate. The surge is working. Um, good night and good luck.
  • Ed Myob · 1 year ago
Sen. Kerry was a war hero ,too, and look what the Swift Boat liars did to him.

POWs don't get special treatment when they run for president.
  • T Trimper · 1 year ago
Especially when McCain made pro-communist propaganda for three years yet was never prosecuted because of Admiral Daddy McCain.

At least Kerry never committed treason.
  • mageduley · 1 year ago
I just don't get the hero thing. Who did he save exactly? I mean if you are a hero you must have saved somebody right? Not just your own butt by posing for propaganda photo ops?
  • Ange · 1 year ago
Wasn't he bombing civilians when he was shot down in Vietnam?
  • Lisa4O · 1 year ago
yes, he was. He has said we should have bombed a lot more.
  • Cyclopath · 1 year ago
He gives hero sandwiches everywhere a bad name!
  • Mark · 1 year ago
Uhm, Ok, you had me fooled (and probably more than just a few readers) into thinking, "You've got to be Freakin' kidding, right?"
The so-called Maverick is getting a reality check, and it has sent him into full-blown panic mode: "Take cover, keep your heads down, my friends, women and children first, oh, and by the way, I'm a POW, so do as
I say and not like these bags of a**es are saying, the economy is fundamentally strong, I mean the fundamental PEOPLE are strong, and by the way, I'm a POW....That is all."
  • Invictus · 1 year ago
A war hero? He was a prisoner of war as we have heard a million times. John Kerry was a real hero, with real medals and the courage to dissent. That's a hero. McCain will not even released his medical records to the public. Only selected reporters have seen them and then they had 3 hours to read over a thousand pages. He apparently has no problem flip floping his way through this election. He should be call whip-lash because that's what you get trying to watch him. Oh yes and he has to postpone the debate. Whip lash McSame.
  • Kwaayesnama · 1 year ago
I do not care if a candidate is a war hero, I do not care is a candidate is a republican or a democrat. I do not care if a candidate is black or white. All I care about is the candidate intelligent enough to get this nation out of the mess we are in now.

I am an Arizona Republican but I will not be voting for John McCain. Why? Because, with the problems in the US and the world is facing today the nation needs intelligence in the White House.

Lets see my choice is John McCain or that smart black man Barack Obama?

McCain who does not know how to use a computer but is willing to learn if we elect him – I’ll just vote for that smart black man.

My Choices are: John McCain who says the economic downturn is psychological? - Na! I'll vote for the smart black man.

McCain who says you are better off under George Bush? - Nope I'll vote for the smart black man.

Mc Cain who wants to continue killing more people looking for weapons of mass destruction that do not exist? - Gee! I'll vote for the smart black man.

McCain who believes that we should stay the course but is not willing to support the people he puts in harms way. - I'll take a chance on the smart black man.

Should I vote for a man that does not know that 9-11 was caused by Osama Bin Laden not Sedam Hussein? - Easy! I'll vote for the smart black man.

Vote for the man who does not know if the Sunnis or Sheits are our enemies? - No way I'll vote for the smart black man.

Vote for the man who helped put our government on the China, Saudi Arabia credit card? - Not a chance I'll vote for the smart black man.

Vote for the man with the worst temper in the Senate to have his finger on the nuclear button? - No way - I’M VOTING FOR THE SMART BLACK MAN, Barack Obama.

I fully agree and share your sentiments. Instinct tells me that JM had to find SOME way of being the top hot dog calling the shots instead of all the years he held his 'maverickness' inside and voted Bush ad nauseaum for 8 years.
It's his ego and very little else. unless, god forbid, alzheimers?
  • AmericanInsurgent · 1 year ago
McCain had a speech ready to do this. This is a cheap political tactic!
These talking points are just the same BS McCain said in his speech. I wouldn't doubt they sent this out on purpose.
  • Giordano Bruno · 1 year ago
So Senator Coburn was a set up guy. In other words he called Obama this morning probably as part of the overall strategy to help share the blame that they had called a political armistice. What a lot of hooey.
  • Alan · 1 year ago
    Ernest,

Do you know what time the talking points were email'ed to reporters? That is highly relevant given the acknowledgment that McCain and Obama spoke on the phone at 2:30 pm (probably EDT). Also, is there any indication when these talking points were written or sent out by McCain HQ?

Think of Government Regulations (as passed by our representatives at whatever level of our democratic form of government) as a Red Light at an intersection.

Traffic lights have Green, Yellow and Red colors. Green for GO, moving traffic flow along, maybe even synchronized to make traffic flow even more smoothly through multiple intersections. Yellow for CAUTION. Red for STOP.

Getting rid of all Red Lights (Regulations), thus leaving only Green Lights at intersections would lead to a whole lot of wrecks...or in the case of the de-regulated Wall Street, a meltdown.

If you've noticed, crooks fleeing from cops in high-speed car chases don't observe Red Lights at intersections. Wrecks and deaths often ensue.

So criminal-minded Reaganite Republians, like former Sen. Phil Gramm of Enron infamy and John McCain, have been pushing for almost thirty years for removing all the Red Lights from financial markets, energy trading centers and even our federal agencies.

    Why?

So the corrupt conservative Republicans could give the "Green Light" to all their crony corporatist pals, letting them rob our country for as much as they could rip-off without silly "Red Lights" or government regulations impeding their rush to obscene riches...at the expense, the wreckage of everyone else.

    And the Yellow "CAUTION" Light?

Treasury Secretary Paulson, formerly of Goldman Sachs, no doubt saw the Wall Street intersection's traffic light flashing Yellow faster and faster, but blew off the warning signs. (Just like the Bush administration blew off all the pre-9/11 warnings of an imminent right-wing domestic terrorist attack).

Finally, all Green Lights (supposed free-market capitalism) is just as dangerous, therefore, as are all Red Lights, which one sees in one totalitarian dictatorship after another (especially Red Commie dictatorships). A blinking Yellow Light cautions against going to both extremes...which history has shown only leads to disaster and wrecked lives.

Just heard Bush say in his speech, "I am going to convene a meeting tomorrow with the leadership of both houses of Congress and I am going to ask Senators McCain and Obama to join me".

Or, as you may know it now from this list, TALKING POINT NUMBER 2
  • Gideon · 1 year ago
It's an embarassing mistake by a low level official ... But after reading the talking points, there isn't much there. They basically repeat McCain's speech earlier.

McCain-Palin have nowhere to go now but down, and I will tell you exactly how this will happen. They can run away from President Bush, but they can't run away from the Republican Party. The Republicans will be regarded from now on as "the party that wrecked America." Over the weeks ahead, as carnage in the economy and the financial markets ramps up, it will become increasingly clear. It is important that this meme be spread through the internet. I urge all commentators to adopt and spread the idea that the Republicans are "the party that wrecked America." It will work because it is the truth. Use it freely. Just spread the word. Get the meme going.

  • obamawillwin · 1 year ago
McCain doesn't want to engage in the debate because he hasn't been preparing. He was going to put it off until today and tomorrow anyways. He's like the kid who didn't do his project when he had plenty of time, and now the teacher is being asked to let him turn it in late. I learned years ago that this kind of tactic doesn't fly.

Now he wants to be seen as the one who is putting the financial crisis first, but he's admitted he doesn't know much about the economy, so what good does it do anyone for him to be in Washington, chipping in his two cents? Perhaps it's like getting a doctor's note to be allowed to skip class on the day the project is due. Only he's not sick. The last thing we need in our next president is avoidance of pivotal moments.

The financial crisis is pivotal, I know, but we've got more than enough people working on it with more understanding of the issues involved. The election is of the utmost importance, as it will determine how all American issues, both foreign and domestic, are handled for the next four years, setting the stage for the future.

Go ahead and skip the debate, McCain. Obama can just address the nation by himself, and we'll know who our next leader will be.

John McHero is not my hero. "My father & uncle (WW2 POW) are my heros, because they spent 6 years in the military during WW2 fighting for our freedom". My uncle never once pounded his chest about his time as a POW. In fact, while he was alive, we could never get him to tell us about WW2 (same for my father).

So heroboy, go to Mississippi Friday and take a wooping for the good-ole-RedWhite&Blue.

Is this the financial genius we are talking about?
The Chicago Tribune Interview 12/07: McCain said, "The issue of economics is something that I've really never understood as well as I should. I understand the basics, the fundamentals, the vision, all that kind of stuff,'' he said. "But I would like to have someone I'm close to that really is a good strong economist. As long as Alan Greenspan is around I would certainly use him for advice and counsel..."I've never been involved in Wall Street, I've never been involved in the financial stuff, the financial workings of the country, so I'd like to have somebody intimately familiar with it," he said of a potential vice presidential candidate, that’s Sarah Palin?

Abstractartgirl, I share the concern you alluded to at the end of your post. Even if McCain's recent forgetfulness is only from tiredness or whatever, the possibility that he might come down with Alzheimer's or dementia in the course of his holding office is frightening. Here's where he should really put the country's interests above political interests and have a thorough physical and mental exam with the results known to us, his employers, just like pilots, policemen, and anyone whose job involves direct responsibilities for the safety and security of others. Here's an article about it:

A sad fact I hadn't known until I read it is that Margaret Thatcher is suffering from dementia and cannot remember that her husband has died. It can happen to anyone.
