The Colorado Independent: Local Immigration Law “Useless”

  • JoeyK · 2 years ago
Special Session Madness ...and now one of the leaders in charge of passing this failed legislation wants to go to Congress. Maybe the state as a whole approved of the ultra-strict anti-immigration measures passed during the special session...but I highly doubt the Democratic voters in CD-2 feel the same way. Senator Fitz-Gerald is going to have to account for why she spearheaded this "useless" legislation when it was polling well, and then tried to turn against it (even know her name is on the bills) as soon as the results became unpopular. It sounds like her stance on the Iraq war. For it when it is polling well. Against it as soon as it is polling poorly.

I think you're right Even more interesting was the fact that there were no real efforts to fix the problems in the most current session.

Rep. Terrence Carroll is a hero for the immigrant community. Cheers to Rep. Carroll!. He has been opposed to this ill-advised, politically motivated and poor legislation from the beginning. Bravo!

Jeers to those legislators and leaders who used the special session with political motives and then neglected to fix the wrongs during the regular session. They could've fixed it, but chose not to do so. Why, I ask would they allow people to be removed from their homes? Why would they not provide women with pre-cancer screening medical exams?

I can only conclude that they don't care.

Where's the Evidence? During the special session, the Democrats did an awfully good job of passing legislation that -- many, many times -- was declared to give Colorado "the toughest immigration policy in the nation."  It was also acknowledged -- many, many times -- that immigration is at heart a federal issue and that the federal government must act, and soon.

Now that the numbers are coming in, some of the Democratic strategists are going to have to find evidence that Colorado's laws are indeed tough.  Unless the supporting evidence is found, the Republicans are going to have a field day with this turnaround in what was expected -- and promised -- to the voters.

And All The Fixin's I think that the answer to your question is that the 2007 legislature was too busy trying to "fix" Amendment 41 (a Jared Polis measure), that they just plain forgot about poor ol' immigration wrongs.
