Welcome Lizz!! Thanks for joining us today.

Hi Wendy Thanks for having me!
  • Wendy Norris · 1 year ago
let's get right down to it Who's the biggest media punk on TV today?
  • Wendy Norris · 1 year ago
Leslie asks... Broadcast news is about ratings and revenue. Therefore, the consumer - people like us -- must take a lot of blame for causing the shift from investigative hard-core news to the entertainment-type reporting we get today on TV ...and in "news" programs like the Daily Show.

Why are Americans trying to escape reality, even in news coverage? Or, have we been brainwashed to believe we don't want news in our news?

  • LizzWinstead · 1 year ago
media punk wow that's tough, how do you pick one? there's many...glenn beck, scarborough's been bugging me lately, bill kristol is clearly at the top of everyone's list

Hi Lizz, Thanks for joining us.

Who is the best "real" national broadcast journalist on the air these days, and what are they doing right?

  • LizzWinstead · 1 year ago
great question, leslie First off, because of the ad revenue news programs are not only competing for the audiences of other news shoes they're competing for the audiences of who's on the prime time broadcast for their ad dollars as well. So, when Dancing With the Stars or American Idol are on up against a news show you find yourself in a bit of a conundrum. I always feel a little surprised that people are getting a lot of their news from comedy shows. The good news about the Daily Show is that you can fact check it and actually get real information from it.
  • LizzWinstead · 1 year ago
Hi Cara Well let's be clear about journalism. How much investigative reporting are we really getting from TV news if you really think about it. The Valerie Plame case was pushed forward by people like Josh Marshall at talkingpointsmemo.com. When you watch a lot of TV news you don't see a lot of investigating you see a lot of parroting of other people who have done the work from magazines and newspapers.

I would have to say the best person out there is Bill Moyers and it was a sad day for all of us when he want to monthly formats instead of weekly of his show NOW on PBS. The folks at Frontline also consistently do amazing work but there is no star face attached to it that I can directly point to.

Hi Hi Lizz!  Thanks for doing this.
  • Wendy Norris · 1 year ago
girl fight! If you had to put money on a political pundit cage match, who would you back:

    Phyllis Schlafly

    -or-

    Naomi Klein

    and why?

  • LizzWinstead · 1 year ago
Hi JohnR Thanks for having me! This is a lot of fun. You guys are doing great work here at Colorado Confidential.
  • Wendy Norris · 1 year ago
You're coming out to Denver later this week What's that all about?
  • LizzWinstead · 1 year ago
cage match Totally Naomi Klein. She'd give a metaphorical one-two punch while Schlafly'd just stand there with her claws out. No contest. Plus Schlafly's too busy peeking into other people's bedrooms. She wouldn't see the punch coming.
  • LizzWinstead · 1 year ago

The Daily Show What kind of resistance, if any, did you experience from the mainstream / corporate interests when you created a news satire show?
  • johnr · 1 year ago
    You're coming Denver?! When??
  • LizzWinstead · 1 year ago
Hi Ryan Really, none. They gave us a lot of freedom which is why it's grown to be such a great success. We were really lucky that's not always the case.
  • LizzWinstead · 1 year ago
This week! I'll be doing shows this Friday 4/25 and Saturday 4/26.

Diane Sawyer* wannabee What's the inspiration behind Wake Up World?

*And what the hell happened to her career?

  • johnr · 1 year ago
new projects? Lizz, I LOVE the Daily Show. Are there any other ideas in the works?
  • LizzWinstead · 1 year ago
Wake Up World! Keeping with satirizing the information outlets it was shocking that no one had taken on the morning shows. There are 23 hours of morning blabathons on everyday each stretching to find anything interesting to say more than the next placing relevance on the trivial and seriousness on the mundane. It's a place where a great number of Americans get information to start their day so it seemed like a perfect thing to satirize.

*That is a very interesting question. I guess after speech writing for Nixon and sitting next to Sam Donaldson maybe the only energy you have left is to throw a softball.

3 minutes in the closet What would you say to a gagged Bill O'Reilly if given the chance?
  • RyanB · 1 year ago
Democracy Now What are your thoughts on Amy Goodman's Democracy Now! TV / Radio show? I just started downloading her podcasts and really like them so far.
  • LizzWinstead · 1 year ago
Wake Up World! Wake Up World is my newest project that Wendy is referring to. Check out the website www.shootthemessengernyc.com and if you're ever in NYC come check out the show!
  • LizzWinstead · 1 year ago
gagged Bill O Reily I would say just lay back while I pour this water onto your face. Really, it's not torture! You said so yourself.
  • LizzWinstead · 1 year ago
Amy Goodman Amy Goodman is an international treasure.
  • LizzWinstead · 1 year ago
Amy Anybody who heard when mainstream democrats were celebrating the Clintons if they had listened to her interview with Bill a few years back they would have gotten a very good insight as to how him and Hilary conduct themselves in a campaign. Try to find it and listen to it.

Where do you anticipate most of your satirical inspiration will come from when the House of Bush is gone?
  • Wendy Norris · 1 year ago
    Here's the biggie... __ Obama

    __ Clinton

    __ McCain

__ Or are you going third party on us?

I hear Alan Keyes just joined the Constitution Party.

  • LizzWinstead · 1 year ago
Bush I'm not so worried about where the inspiration will come from as if you've decided to be a professional politician you're always going to provide me with new material. We have a congress, we have the media, we have corporate malfeasance all which I do not see going when Bush goes. I feel pretty good that the pool of material will constantly be filling up.

Most recently... ...what's the actual network "news" story that you've seen that ranked highest on the unintentional comedy scale?
  • LizzWinstead · 1 year ago
I'm bitter Obama, aren't the other two eventually going to be on one ticket?
  • Wendy Norris · 1 year ago
we've got plenty of inspiration here Douglas Bruce and his most recent "illiterate peasants" remark is just scratching the surface on that lunacy.

Any chance "Wake Up World" could go on a nationwide tour? It'd be like Capitol Steps, only not lame.

PopeWatch The unending coverage of the Pope's every movement from getting on an elevator to getting off the elevator to walking towards the car to getting into the car to driving to the destination. The button on the Pope's visit was when Bush said after he spoke in Washington; "Your Holyness, awesome speech!" The only other thing he could have said to make it more embarassing was "Holy Dude! Awesome speech!"
  • LizzWinstead · 1 year ago
That's it! Yes! Everyone should take a listen.

stimulus I was gonna bail out Bear Stearns but Chase beat me to the punch goddammit! So I guess I'll have to buy a Hummer stretch limo and figure out what to do with the rest.
