The Colorado Independent: Lawmakers Celebrated For 25-Cent Cap; Prices For Public Info Still Rising

It costs money for a reason It often takes hours of a government employee's time to fulfill an open records request. It's not fair for taxpayers to pick up the tab for the employee's time. It's only right that the person or company that requested the info be charged.

Not always Where there is extra research or labor involved as in an open records request that is reasonable. But where an office exists as a repository of records, such as the county clerk and recorder, copying charges should be minimal. Their job is to provide the public with the records they need. The public library doesn't charge labor to bring you a copy of a book. Before the new law passed last year I wanted a 30 page document. It would have cost me $37.50 for the employee to type in a 10 digit number and click "print." Now it would be $7.50 which is better but still overpriced. When I was there they were phoneying up the labor costs that they would charge to get around the 25 cent limit.
