my intrepid skills notwithstanding Fawcett has no say in the matter with respect to excess contributions for a debt relief campaign. They must be returned, according to the FEC rulebook:

A contribution made after a particular candidate's election may only be applied to that election if it does not exceed the campaign committee's net debts outstanding<sup>16</sup> for the election. A contribution that does exceed net debts is considered an illegal contribution and must be handled as such (see above). A campaign committee receiving such a contribution may seek redesignation of the excessive portion. See section below. 11 CFR 110.1(b)(3)(i) and 103.3(b)(3).

As to the timing of the debt relief effort, the FEC completed a routine audit of his campaign books on September 7 that was released to the public on September 21.

I'd be much more inclined to draw the conclusion that Fawcett, upon final notice of achieving compliance, is closing the books on his campaign committee and now must resolve the remaining debt before the Dec. 31 filing deadline.

A conclusion supported by Fawcett's repeated public statements that he will not run again in 2008. I'll take his word on that until I learn otherwise.

I don't see anything to support your conspiracy theory that he's planning another run.

This wasn't a story about Lamborn This was a story about Fawcett. When you do a story about Lamborn, then I'll be happy to comment about Lamborn.

As for Soros, since he and his money, conveyed through a number of organizations, provide a significant portion of Democrat Party campaign funding, that was a relevant comment. Interesting that you try to dismiss it by calling it a "boogeyman."

So you just came across as very strongly partisan. I have to wonder why that is.

Now Wendy... going to tell the whole story? Wendy: for the most part I think this is good report on an oft overlooked aspect of campaigning. What is unsaid here is that the technique of repaying campaign debt with a multi-month strategy is often used as a technique to raise money, name ID, and awareness in preparation for another run. The timing is particularly notable given that Fawcett has had nearly a year to start this effort but waited to the brink of campaign season to get the ball rolling.

Wendy, did you ask Fawcett what he will do if he raises more than the money he owes himself? Surely an intrepid reporter with such amazing skill and prowess asked the obvious question... what did he say? If he reported that he intends only to cover his debt, it doesn't mean he isn't running again, but it's certainly important information.

The part that people need to know is that with an open account Fawcett can raise as much money as he wants - not just the 50K he owes himself - in preparation for another shot at the impossible 5th CD seat.

take a closer look at the FEC reports You certainly have a right to your opinion about this campaign drive. No argument from me though I think raising the Soros boogeyman is a little silly.

But Fawcett's campaign books were in the black at the end of 2006. Meanwhile, Rep. Lamborn reported $104K in debt.

So, am I to assume that your parting shot about "spending other people's money that he doesn't really have" holds true for Mr. Lamborn as well?
