It's the cops' first ammendment rights to poke fun at a long and tiring week, but to a liberal, that is not ok. Yet its ok to dress up like a complete fool and disrupt an event or the general public.

The biggest difference is that rather than private citizens exercising their freedom of speech these are people from a state/government institution, representing that government institution (they are employees of the state). . .

HUGE DIFFERENCE, they SHOULD be held accountable and and it would be in the state's interest to hold them accountable and watch ther actions so as not to cause public distrust with the state and it's employees.

Many people forget that any government official/employee is employed by WE THE PEOPLE and our tax dollars. They aren't simply private citizens, rather as police officers they've vowed to serve the public.

First of all, congratulations on learning to spell "hypocrisy." I'm sure you practiced very hard. Unfortunately, you're not using the word correctly. A hypocrite /does/ one thing and /says/ another.

Now, as for the police. The police are employees, paid by the state to act according to the law and not to their own politics. So I think that as the "boss" we have executive prilviledge to tell them when they are acting like thugs, instead of champions of justice. Off-duty police can do or say whatever they like, so we agree there. However, when police are permitted to act like hooligans /off-duty/ and then expected to be on better behavior /on-duty/ ... Well, imagine if we told day-care faculty that they could look at all the kiddie porn they wanted to, and openly discuss sexualizing children /after/ hours, but they'd better be clear of impure thoughts when they come into work?

I wonder how a Red interprets /that/ contradiction?

Of course, we're not talking about that. We're talking about people who are supposed to protect us, not terrify us; At least I sincerely /hope/ that's not what my taxes are paying for. If I want to live in fear, I can wear a grenade on my chest. So when I hear about cops walking around after hours with signs on their backs saying, "We are going to kick your free-speaking asses" ... Well, I have a hard time thinking that's in the interest of political discourse, or mild entertainment. Come to think of it, couldn't a shirt like this (sans the (/) 68 logo) be used by BOTH sides? A "liberal" could wear this shirt as if to say, "This is how Cops are."

Either way, it doesn't bode well for our sovereigns. In all practicality, this shirt shouldn't exist.

If you find this even remotely funny, it means you've never been the victim of police brutality. This is not a free speech issue. The issue has to do with law enforcement openly celebrating and promoting police brutality.
How can people trust law enforcement if they're afraid of the people that they as citizens have hired to "protect and serve."

I'm all for free speech, but to celebrate "BEATing the crowds" is not a responsible action by the people we are supposed to trust. Anybody remember the beating of John Heaney by two Denver cops, who then lied about it and sought to have him sent to jail for attacking THEM? Only a video proved them wrong...but they are still on the force, looking to BEAT some more citizens.

They say they haven't gotten any complaints about the t-shirt, maybe we should fix that:

J- Whose first amendment rights were protesters opposing? The first amendment does not guarantee the right to assault. What you seem to be missing here is that no one involved in the DNC or RNC protests was opposed to the voicing of alternate view points in protest. Protesters do not try to shut down other protesters- and it is the fact that so many concerns can be brought up from both "conservative" and "liberal" perspectives that illustrates the need for public discourse. The only force bringing a halt to that discourse is violence and antagonism. No harm ever came from listening. We've listened to politicians long enough in this election, and now it is time for political forces to open their ears.
