John Andrews’ strange, clueless ‘Coloradan of the Year’ column
Josh Penry is a former McInnis staffer. How can he run for Congress when he's probably got a fundraising goal to meet for his old boss.
The CD-2 Democaratic nominating convention may still turn into an interesting show. The tug of war over who wins the Amendment 41 (Article XXIX) slug-fest to be annointed Udall's successor is far from resolved.
The question now becomes how will the RNC judge the defeat risk facing Colorado's trio of terrible Republicans - Tancredo, Musgrave and Lamborn? How can they spend dwindling national cash on an internal primary struggle in CD-5, the fading of a fringe-issue in CD-4, and the quixotic media circus surrounding CD-6?
With less of a burden to defend CD-3 and CD-7, maybe the DCCC will stay with a CD-4 challenger down to the wire of election day. Marilyn Musgrave will have to retire her gauntlet of storm-troopers and actually meet constituents over the next 2-years to compensate for less RNC TV funding in 2008.
CD-5 doesn't look like such a sure thing for Doug Lamborn going into 2008. Being denied a seat on the Armed Services Committee is sending shock-waves through the military and government contrator circles. Membership on the Natural Resources Committee doesn't carry the same weight in C-Springs. The encouragement for Jeff Crank to put on the gloves for the primaries is growing.
Analyzing Tom Tancredo between now and August 2008 has nothing to do with public policy. It's all about media coverage. Colorado can expect to be victimized by Dick Wadhams pulling strings so Tancredo can be both a Presidential and a CD-6 candidate.
